From the 1990s, the Nordic countries were considered the new lands of expression of progressive rock which, like many other musical movements, had eaten its black bread during the previous decade.
This revival, often influenced by a return to listening to the big names in prog, was largely driven by the domination of metal on the international scene.
However, the Nordic progressive movement has deeper and older roots. Indeed, from the end of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies, a good number of musicians discovered and tried out progressive developments, adding their national or regional touch, their language, their folklore, but also their political aspirations and identity.
It is on this musicological walk that Norden Prog invites: Nordic progressive music through one hundred and fifty album reviews which take you to Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, but also Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, in a broad political and cultural sense of what the Nordic countries are. All progressive trends are also represented here, whether symphonic progressive, progressive metal, electronic music, jazz-rock, Canterbury style, progressive folk, krautrock, avant-prog or Rock in Opposition (RIO)…
A timeless journey within large spaces, the work proposes to go beyond the sole historical perspective in order to show the musical scope and the major importance of a Nordic progressive movement too often reduced to its Scandinavian and metallic expression.

Henri Vaugrand is a sociologist, translator, musician, columnist and founder of the Vallis Lupi label. He is interested in all cultural forms and what they say about the characteristics of our societies.
