From the 1990s onwards, the Nordic countries were seen as the new lands of expression for progressive rock which, like many other musical movements, had eaten its black bread during the previous decade.
This revival, often influenced by a return to listening to the great names of prog, was for many driven by the dominance of metal on the international scene.
Nevertheless, the Nordic progressive movement has deeper and older roots. Indeed, from the late Sixties and early Seventies, many musicians discovered and tried their hand at progressive developments, adding their national or regional touch, their language, their folklore, but also their political aspirations and identity.
Norden Prog: Nordic Progressive Music invites you to take a musicological stroll through one hundred and fifty album reviews from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, as well as Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, in a broad political and cultural sense of the Nordic countries. All progressive trends are represented here, including symphonic progressive, progressive metal, electronic music, jazz-rock, Canterbury style, progressive folk, krautrock, avant-prog and Rock in Opposition (RIO)….
A timeless journey through wide-open spaces, the book goes beyond a purely historical perspective to show the musical scope and major importance of a Nordic progressive movement too often reduced to its Scandinavian and metallic expression.
